Tony’s tops the Chocolate Scorecard

We’re proud to share that for the 6th time running, Tony’s has topped the Chocolate Scorecard – a further proof point of the positive impact we’re making for farming families in West Africa, as we work to end exploitation in cocoa.

Tony’s tops the Chocolate Scorecard

Released around Easter every year, the Chocolate Scorecard is the chocolate industry’s independent assessment founded by Be Slavery Free and Mighty Earth, along with other civil society organizations. Unwrapping the truth about chocolate brands’ business practices, the Chocolate Scorecard ranks and grades companies on key sustainability issues, celebrating the industry’s frontrunners while calling out those who can (and should!) do better. Curious about our score? Let’s dive right in..

we’re seeing green!
Sooo.. What’s the verdict? Excellent question. This year, we scored top marks in 5 out of 6 categories: traceability, living income, child labor, pesticides + deforestation and climate.

Our green score is a direct result of sourcing all our cocoa according to Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles, designed to tackle the willful exploitation of people and land – which has led to widespread poverty among cocoa farmers, 1.56 million children working on cocoa farms and extensive deforestation across West Africa.

This year, we raised our score on pesticides from yellow to green. We’re super proud to see that our increased efforts in monitoring pesticides and reducing risks to farmers – via increased investment in labor brigades – are paying off.

Our agroforestry score is yellow this year, though – a sign that we can raise the bar, too. We strive to score green in all areas, so we can make as much impact as possible, and we recognize that agroforestry is a big part of that.

We’re working on developing a long-term agroforestry strategy across our supply chain. That means we’re busy identifying ways to create more complex forms of agroforests on cocoa farms. We believe this strategy will help reduce risks associated with climate change, pests and diseases, and will strengthen farmers’ resilience.

only together, we can
While it’s is good to see some of the big chocolate companies making progress on transparency and traceability, we all have further to go if we are to tackle the challenges of living income and child labor.

Commenting on the results, Tony’s Open Chain Lead, Joke Aerts, shares: “At Tony’s Chocolonely, transparency isn’t just a value – it’s a necessity for driving real change in the cocoa industry. The Chocolate Scorecard plays a crucial role in holding the industry accountable by ensuring companies report on the same key indicators, creating a level playing field for meaningful progress.

We are proud to participate and honored to have received this Award for the 6th consecutive time. The Scorecard not only motivates us to continuously improve but also pushes the entire industry to step up. We hope it inspires others to take action towards a truly fair and transparent cocoa supply chain.
