Here's our take on Nestle's new program
Nice work, Nestlé. Next step: a higher price for cocoa?
We’re super pumped about Nestlé’s recent announcement to introduce a new program tackling child labor, aiming for full traceability and addressing poverty as the root cause of the problems in cocoa. This program really teaches other Big Choco a thing or two about stepping up their game..
Here is what our very own Impactus Prime, Paul Schoenmakers, has to say about it:
“We are excited about Nestlé’s new program and its approach to tackle child labor risks. We welcome Nestlé in joining our example by aiming for full traceability and addressing poverty as the root cause of the problems in cocoa. This program is a great step in the right direction and we’re curious to see the results. These direct cash transfers will help to increase household incomes. But there’s no way around it: the current price for cocoa is too low. To solve poverty in cocoa, a higher price for cocoa needs to be paid to bridge the gap to a living income. To take full responsibility and address poverty in cocoa, Nestlé also needs to change their procurement practices and pay a higher price for their cocoa.”
In short: it’s a great step in the right direction and we’re curious to see the results! BUT (yes, there’s a BUT) the less than tasty truth is: the current price of cocoa is still too low to solve poverty in cocoa. Can't wait for them to side with us on this crucial point too.
